Top 5 tips for keeping your holiday costs down
Holidays are important for everyone as they allow you to escape your daily life, recharge your batteries and explore new places. While these certainly can be expensive, you do not always need to break the bank for a special vacation.
Here are a few suggestions for holidaying on a tight budget.
1. Plan ahead
By planning ahead you will be able to take advantage of destination specials rather than the high costs associated with last minute bookings. If you give us the heads up on your plans, we can notify you the moment a special is released suiting your needs. Also with flights, usually the longer you leave it and the closer the time comes to your departure date, the higher the cost of the airfare. Planning ahead most importantly gives you heaps more choice. You will have a choice of flights, accommodation, cabin styles and tours to suit you perfectly.
Don’t change money at an airport – this will be the worst conversion rate around. Instead, perhaps grab a few dollars of the currency you will need so you have some available when you first arrive. Next, always pay in the local currency, this will avoid several conversions and save you fees. It doesn’t cost much to draw local currency from a local ATM.
When possible, avoid school holidays and about a week either side. Holiday costs are considerably cheaper at any other time of the year.
Keep an eye on your bag weights, paying exorbitant excess fees at the airport will ruin your holiday and blow your budget.
Some cities are quite compact, so consider walking rather than using taxis or public transport. If you do wish to use public transport, look at a city pass. The Vienna Card, for example, allows unlimited free public transport for 72 hours, plus offers discounts at more than 210 museums, theatres, concert halls, shops and restaurants.
