Hawaii has long been thought of as the perfect destination for honeymooning couples, but these days the islands also have much to offer families of all sizes.

Hawaii is now known as one of the best places for family destinations. ‘Keiki’, which is the Hawaiian word for children, are welcomed everywhere.  Most of the hotels and resorts offer great low-cost attractions for kids, with clubs, menus, etc.

Here are some tips to help you figure out if you should head to Honolulu, Kauai, Maui or one of the other gorgeous tropical destinations.

There are six “main” islands in Hawaii that you can basically visit. It’s important to note that every island is unique, even if separated by just a few miles of ocean.

1. Visit Waikkiki beach

Waikkiki beachOahu is perfect for a family or couple looking for a vacation that will keep them busy day and night with a wide range of activities you think of when you think “Hawaii”.

Oahu is considered the friendliest island for families with kids who want the “classic” Hawaii experience.

By day, hit the beach for scuba, snorkelling and some of the best surfing in the world.

Hawaii is so popular as vacation spot because of their environment and beaches. With the temperature between 25°-29° Celsius, Hawaii weather is perfect, it’s never too hot or too cold!

They have more than 125 awesome beaches to enjoy when you are in Hawaii. Oahu has some of the best beaches for kids. From the famous Waikkiki Beach to the Lagoons at Ko Olina, Lanikai and Hilton Hawaiian Village lagoon are just a few beaches with calm ocean conditions that make it safe for families.

2. Hanauma Bay State Park

You do have to sit through a ‘briefing’ on protecting the area before heading down into the Bay but it is a good spot for a family picnic and some snorkelling. It can be extremely busy so expect to snorkel with a lot of people.

3. Diamond Head Crater Hike

Diamond HeadDiamond Head Crater, an extinct volcano, looms prominently at the end of Waikiki Beach and can be hiked from the internal crater to the summit rewarding you with impressive 360 degree views over Oahu.

The hike itself from the Monument Visitors Center is 2.6km return.  However, if you catch the public bus it will drop you off on the outside of the crater which will extend your hike by a couple of kilometres as you walk through a tunnel and down into the crater to the start of the official walk.

If you find that the kids are too worn out once returning to the base of the climb, there are plenty of local taxis waiting to return you to town for a reasonable price.

4. Visit USS Arizona Memorial (Pearl Harbour)

Pearl HarbourFor many, a tript to Honolulu, Hawaii, is not complete without visiting Pearl Harbour.

If your kids are a little older and are capable of respectfully visiting the site. It’s a great history lesson which many older kids or teenagers will really enjoy. Millions of people are visiting each and every year to soak in a bit of history and pay their respects at the USS Arizona Memorial.

One Pearl Harbor travel tip

Don’t take a purse or backpack. In order to enter the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, you have to go through security. No bags of any sort are allowed through. You are permitted to take in a wallet, camera, and water bottle, but you have to carry them all. If you do bring a bag with you, you’ll have to store it in a locker and pay a per-bag rate.

5. Shopping, Shopping, and More Shopping!

From local craft, farmers markets, factory outlets, to mega shopping malls and high-end international designer boutiques; Hawaii has it all!

Ala Moana Shopping is pcked full of mega brands and stores it is a fun outing for the whole family especially when you are looking for fun things to do in Honolulu with kids on a rainy afternoon.

The kids will love their visit to the Disney store and there was plenty to keep mum and dad happy.
